Burning Wheel

I recently purchased the basic books for The Burning Wheel. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I have to admit I love the system: one simple die mechanic, lots of implementation rules.

The rules for combat (including intellectual combat – i.e. Debate), allow for a chess-move level of tactics and planning that appeal to me.

I have tried on a few occasions to add that “feel” of tactics to D&D combat, but each time I've fallen into a “Rock/Paper/Scissors” approach. BW's approach allows for more shades of grey (those who are familiar with the system please ignore the pun) than my simplistic system.

Even if you never play it, The Burning Wheel is worth reading. It will open your eyes on a different way of doing things, and get you thinking about your own system more. More info
